Versova Beach

Mumbai's Fishing Village Beach — Where Turtles Return After 20 Years

Versova Beach is a 2 km long beach in Versova village, Andheri West, Mumbai Suburban district, Maharashtra. Located at the mouth of Versova Creek where the Arabian Sea meets the city's largest fishing community (Koliwada), it gained global fame after activist Afroz Shah led the world's largest beach cleanup drive here between 2015–2016, which successfully brought Olive Ridley turtles back after 20 years.

A Glimpse into History of Versova Beach

Koli Fishing Heritage

Versova Koliwada is one of Mumbai's oldest surviving fishing villages, with Koli fishermen working these waters for over 400 years. The community's traditional fishing boats (horis), bamboo fish-drying racks, and morning fish auctions define Versova's authentic identity far removed from Mumbai's urban face. The Koli community's rights over the beachfront are constitutionally protected.

Urban Neglect & the Cleanup Revolution (2015)

By 2015, decades of unmanaged waste had buried Versova under 5 million kg of plastic and debris — making it virtually unusable. Lawyer Afroz Shah began a weekly cleanup drive in October 2015 with just 85 volunteers. Over 21 months, 5,000+ volunteers cleared the beach. The UN Environment Programme awarded Shah its highest environmental honour in 2017.

Turtle Return & Conservation Legacy

In February 2018 — just 27 months after the cleanup began — 80 Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings emerged on Versova Beach for the first time in over 20 years. The event made international headlines as proof of ecological restoration. The Forest Department now monitors nest sites annually, and Versova has become a global case study in urban coastal conservation.

Ecological & Cultural Significance

Versova Beach sits at the confluence of Versova Creek and the Arabian Sea — a critical wetland corridor for migratory birds and sea turtles in metropolitan Mumbai. The Koliwada fishing auction (5–7 AM daily) is one of Mumbai's most authentic cultural experiences, where Pomfret, Surmai (kingfish), and Bombil (Bombay Duck) are traded fresh off returning boats.

Events & Experiences

Narali Pournima — Coconut Festival

Every August on the full moon day, the Koli fishing community celebrates Narali Pournima by offering coconuts to the sea and launching decorated boats. Versova's Koliwada becomes a spectacle of colour, traditional music, and community prayer marking the start of the fishing season after the monsoon break.

International Coastal Cleanup Day

Every September, Versova hosts one of India's largest coastal cleanup events drawing 2,000–5,000 volunteers in a single day. The event has been continuous since Afroz Shah's original drive, making Versova an annual landmark on the global environmental calendar with international media coverage.

Did You Know?

Versova Beach's cleanup is listed in the Guinness Book as the world's largest beach cleanup when volunteers shifted over 5.3 million kg of trash in 96 weeks. The effort also inspired the Indian government's Swachh Bharat coastal mission and was cited at the UN General Assembly as a model for community-led urban environmental restoration.

Turtle nesting season (November–March) — report any nest sightings to the Forest Department. Do not disturb nesting areas marked with flags.
Fresh seafood at Versova's local koliwada restaurants — Pomfret fry and Koliwada fish thali are exceptional and very affordable compared to city restaurants.
